Football Campeonato Carioca 2017 will be the 116th edition of the elite of football in Rio de Janeiro. With a new format, the first phase will be played for six clubs (group A): four times worse campaign in the previous year (excluding the demoted) plus the two promoted from Serie B in 2016. The two best placed to advance the phase principal and the other four associations vying for the quadrangular relegation. The two worse quadrangular fall to Serie B the following year. Already the main phase will be divided into two groups of six teams each (Groups B and C), with two turns (Guanabara Cup and Rio Cup) with semifinals and finals in single games. From this edition, the champions of each shift job guarantee to the semifinals of the competition, and not to the end, as in the past. The other two semifinalists will be the best placed teams in the overall standings out the winners of shifts and disregarding the points obtained in the semifinals and end of shifts. If a team wins both the Guanabara Cup as the Rio Cup, the three best teams complete the competition for places in the big decision. In the semifinals of shifts, the teams with the best campaigns in the groups will lead the tie. In the semifinal of the championship, who advances with the score level will be the champions of each shift. In no end there is the advantage of the draw. The general semifinal will be held in a single game, while the final will return.
